Silverstone track days and race weekends: hiring the right 4x4
Towing your car to the circuit or bringing a group for race day? Here is what to hire.

Getting your car to the circuit
If you race or run track days, you probably transport your car on a trailer. An open single-axle trailer with a light car might weigh under 2,000 kg loaded, but an enclosed twin-axle trailer with a car, tools and spares can approach 3,500 kg. Know your trailer's maximum authorised mass before you choose a tow vehicle.
For heavier enclosed trailers, a Ford Ranger or Toyota Hilux is the safe choice, as both are rated to tow 3,500 kg braked. The load bed is also handy for tyres, fuel cans and tools, keeping them out of the trailer.
Wet paddocks and grass car parks
UK circuits often use grass for parking and overflow paddocks. After rain these turn soft quickly, and a two-wheel-drive car towing a trailer can get stuck. A 4x4 with low-range gearing pulls away cleanly and saves you from waiting for a tractor.
Group travel for race weekends
For big race weekends, traffic around the circuit can be slow and parking expensive. Travelling in one 9-seater Mercedes V-Class means one parking pass, one driver and everyone arriving together. For a more premium arrival, a Range Rover Sport or Defender suits hospitality guests.
Tips for booking
To make your weekend run smoothly:
- Book early for major event weekends, as demand rises sharply
- Tell us your trailer weight and hitch type when you enquire
- Plan extra time for traffic on event days
- Add a second driver if you are sharing the drive home
