Land Rover Defender vs Range Rover Sport: which 4x4 should you hire?
Two very different luxury 4x4s. Here is how to decide which one fits your trip.

Two premium 4x4s, two different jobs
The modern Land Rover Defender and the Range Rover Sport share a badge and a lot of technology, but they feel very different on the road. Choosing the right one for your hire comes down to where you are going and what you want from the drive.
When to hire a Land Rover Defender
The Defender is built for capability first. It has high ground clearance, air suspension that can raise the body for rough ground, and a cabin designed to be practical as well as comfortable. It is the better choice for the Scottish Highlands, the Lake District, farm tracks, shooting estates, beach launches and any trip where the weather might turn.
The Defender 110 has five doors and a large boot, making it a strong family car for a UK holiday. It is also a capable tow car for caravans and horseboxes.
When to hire a Range Rover Sport
The Range Rover Sport is the more refined motorway car. It is quieter at speed, sharper through corners and has a more luxurious interior. It suits business trips, weddings, airport collections and long drives where comfort matters more than mud.
It is still a genuine 4x4 with strong all-weather ability, so a snowy lane or a wet grass car park is no problem.
Quick comparison
A simple way to decide:
- Mostly motorways, city and events: Range Rover Sport
- Countryside, Highlands, estates and rough tracks: Defender
- Family holiday with lots of luggage: Defender 110
- Wedding, executive visitor or special occasion: Range Rover Sport or Velar
